What Is Close Ratio in Insurance Sales?

Close ratio is a term that gets used loosely in insurance agencies. Sometimes it means quote-to-close. Sometimes it means lead-to-close. Sometimes it's an overall agency number. Here's what each version actually means.

In this guide:

  • The short definition
  • Two common versions
  • Healthy benchmarks
  • Why specificity matters

What is close ratio?

The percent of opportunities you turn into sales. The "opportunity" can be a lead or a quote, depending on who's using the term.

The two common versions

Version 1 — Quote-to-close

Policies bound ÷ quotes delivered.

Measures pure selling skill. What happens once the producer is in the conversation?

Typical range: 20–40% for personal lines. Higher for referrals. See what is quote-to-bind ratio.

Version 2 — Lead-to-close

Policies bound ÷ leads received.

Measures overall funnel efficiency. How many leads end up as customers?

Typical range: 15–25% for personal lines internet leads. Higher for referrals and walk-ins.

Why specificity matters

"Our close ratio is 30%" is meaningless without knowing which version.

  • 30% quote-to-close = solid
  • 30% lead-to-close = exceptional (probably mostly referral traffic)
  • 30% on some other denominator = ???

When asking another agency or a producer about their close rate, always ask "of what?" Ambiguous numbers lead to bad comparisons.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which version should I use in producer coaching?

Quote-to-close. It isolates selling skill from lead-volume variables.

Can a producer have a great close ratio but miss their goal?

Yes — if lead volume is thin. High close ratio × low volume = low absolute sales.

Is close ratio the same as bind ratio?

Yes — bind ratio and close ratio are used interchangeably. "Quote-to-bind" and "quote-to-close" mean the same thing.

What's the best way to improve close ratio?

  1. Faster response time to initial lead. 2. Structured follow-up cadence (most closes need 3+ touches). 3. Ride-along coaching on 5 quote calls to find pitch weaknesses.
